Canada has a history of carbon tax failures, with emissions rising 14% from 1990 to 2021 and decreasing by 8% from 2005 to 2021. In comparison, the U.S., Canada’s largest trading partner, has never had a national carbon tax and has seen a decrease in emissions. With President-elect Donald Trump in office, it is unlikely that the U.S. will implement a national carbon tax or adhere to the UN’s Paris climate agreement.
