A recent study indicates that the South Atlantic Anomaly, a significant gap in Earth’s magnetic field, has expanded by nearly two million square miles since 2014, now covering an area almost half the size of Europe. This anomaly, discovered in 1958, allows harmful cosmic rays to penetrate closer to Earth’s surface, potentially damaging satellites. The changes in the magnetic field are attributed to complex processes in the Earth’s core and mantle. Experts warn that cosmic rays can lead to satellite malfunctions and electrical surges on Earth.
