Michele Facchini, a Second World War researcher, unexpectedly connected with Hector McDonald, a soldier from Cape Breton who died in 1944, while metal detecting in northern Italy. On July 6, he discovered a duffel bag belonging to McDonald, revealing his history as a lance-sergeant in the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. McDonald was killed by a mine during a battle near the Lamone River, and his story has been revived after 81 years, reconnecting him with his family. Researchers like Facchini and Mariangela Rondinelli are dedicated to honoring the legacy of Canadian soldiers who fought in Italy.
