This week, a relentless deluge of rain pounded the United Arab Emirates and Oman, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 20 individuals. The storm also led to numerous delays and cancellations at Dubai’s airport and brought several cities to a standstill. Experts have attributed this extreme weather to climate change, describing it as a weather system supercharged by environmental factors.
The storm initially hit Oman on Sunday, claiming the lives of 19 people and causing widespread flash flooding. Streets in Muscat, the capital city, transformed into raging rivers as a result. In the U.A.E., which saw its heaviest rainfall in 75 years, one person lost their life in Ras Al-Khaimah. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors as images and videos depicted cars submerged on congested highways and airplanes navigating flooded runways.
