New Zealand has experienced an unusually wet and sun-deprived January, according to Niwa data, which indicates that most regions received less than 85% of their typical sunshine along with significantly above-normal rainfall. Areas such as Auckland, Coromandel, Tauranga, and the East Cape reported up to four times their usual monthly rain, while Canterbury and Marlborough saw two to three times the normal totals. The adverse weather has led to landslides in Bay of Plenty during what should be summer’s peak. However, MetService forecasts brighter conditions ahead.
