Spanish police have discovered a sophisticated drug-smuggling tunnel beneath a warehouse, equipped with a rail system and cranes to transport hashish from Morocco into Spain. The tunnel, which spans three levels including a descent shaft and a drug storage chamber, was designed with pumping and soundproofing systems to operate discreetly. In a recent operation, authorities seized 17 metric tons of hashish and $1.6 million in cash, arresting 27 individuals linked to the smuggling network. The operation was reportedly led by two key figures, one based in Morocco described as the “narco-architect,” and another in Ceuta who owned the seized drugs. Video footage of the police raid has been released, showcasing the scale of the operation. Hashish trafficking generally occurs via sea routes, with Spain accounting for a significant portion of resin seizures in the EU, according to recent data.

Why It Matters

The discovery of this tunnel highlights the ongoing challenges Spain faces in combating drug trafficking, particularly from Morocco, which is a major source of hashish in Europe. In 2023, Spain was responsible for 68% of all hashish resin seizures in the EU, reflecting its central role in the drug trade. Previous police operations have uncovered various smuggling techniques, including the use of high-speed boats and underwater networks, emphasizing the adaptability and sophistication of drug trafficking organizations. This incident underscores the persistent threat of organized crime and the need for continual law enforcement efforts to disrupt these networks.
