The Justice Department released Volume I of Smith’s final report on the election case against Trump. Smith defended the decision to bring criminal charges against Trump for attempting to retain power after losing the 2020 election. The report stated that the case had to be dismissed before Trump took office in 2024 due to constitutional interpretations. Trump criticized Smith’s report as “fake findings.” Smith was appointed as special counsel in November 2022 to investigate Trump’s retention of classified documents and obstruction of the federal government’s investigation.
