Service dog dies after attack at daycare

A Gatineau man, Félix Lanthier, is demanding the closure of a local dog daycare, Kaninou, after his golden retriever, Austin, was fatally injured while in its care. Lanthier left Austin at the daycare on March 12 before a business trip, but on March 17, he received a call informing him that his dog had been bitten and required emergency veterinary treatment in Ottawa. Upon arrival, Lanthier discovered that Austin had suffered severe injuries, including multiple bite wounds and muscle tears, and he died later that day. Following the incident, Lanthier has been in contact with other clients of Kaninou who reported similar issues with their dogs. Although the daycare’s owner initially covered veterinary expenses, Lanthier claims his attempts to communicate afterward were ignored, prompting him to seek legal action.

Why It Matters

Dog daycare services are increasingly popular as pet ownership rises, creating a demand for reliable care options. Reports of incidents involving dog injuries or fatalities can lead to heightened scrutiny and regulatory action in the pet care industry. In this case, the situation underscores the importance of safety standards and accountability for facilities that care for animals. The investigation by Gatineau police may also reveal broader patterns of negligence or safety concerns within similar establishments, impacting public trust in dog daycare services.
