Australian students’ understanding of civics education has reached a record low, with only 43% of Year 6 students and 28% of Year 10 students meeting the proficient standard in 2024, according to ACARA’s national test results. This marks a significant decline from previous years and is the worst performance since assessments began in 2004. The test assesses attitudes and engagement with civics and citizenship, with Year 10 students expected to have a detailed understanding of Australian democracy, as stated by ACARA’s chairman Derek Scott.
