Typically, Spaniards have two surnames, inherited from both their father and mother, unlike in many other countries where only one surname is used. Spanish citizenship requires the registration of one name and two surnames in the Civil Registry, following the same pattern as native Spaniards. Exceptions to this rule include cases where parentage cannot be proven, resulting in the doubling of the single surname.
