The Sunni factions led by Syed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal and Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar are both claiming to be the torch-bearers of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, an organisation formed in 1926 to counter Islamic reformists. Kanthapuram’s faction, formed in 1989, is leading the centenary celebrations, while the original Samastha faction, led by E.K. Aboobacker Musliar, is facing internal disputes and struggles. Despite differences, both factions are planning significant events and projects to commemorate the centenary.
