Sweltering temperatures reaching up to 38C are expected today, with several areas likely to break heat records. Regions such as Whangārei, Whitianga, and Napier are particularly at risk, with Napier’s previous January record of 36.9C from 1979 only slightly above today’s forecast of 36C. Auckland will also experience a rise, with a forecast high of 29C. The heatwave, fueled by Australian weather patterns, has already pushed temperatures above 30C in many locations.
