Hamish Riach, starting his second term as chief executive of Ashburton District, is prepared to lead the area through major projects and political changes. With seven years of experience in the role, he is focused on upcoming challenges such as water reforms, a new bridge, and planning for the annual budget and election. Riach, along with his wife Jane, who works in the library, has made Ashburton their home since his appointment in 2018. Reflecting on his achievements, he is proud of securing funding for the second bridge and overseeing the construction of Te Whare Whakatere. Despite the challenges brought on by Covid, Riach remains committed to his role and enjoys relaxing by playing golf at the Ashburton Golf Club. He has found quitting social media to be a freeing decision and is dedicated to continuing his work in the district.

Fourth person charged with murder of Waimate man
A 32-year-old South Canterbury woman has been charged with the murder of Anaru Moana, who was reported missing in December 2021. She appeared in court and was remanded in custody, with a court date set for April 11.
