David Mirkovic led the No. 3 seed Illinois with a stellar performance, scoring 29 points and grabbing 17 rebounds as the Fighting Illini routed the No. 14 seed Penn Quakers 105-70 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Keaton Wagler contributed 18 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds, helping Illinois improve to a 25-8 record. The team shot 50% from the field and made 15 three-pointers, significantly outperforming the Quakers on the boards, 48-25. Penn’s Michael Zanoni was the standout for his team with 20 points, while TJ Power, who was recovering from an illness, managed only six points, well below his average. Mirkovic’s strong first half helped Illinois establish a 40-30 lead, which they extended in the second half, setting up a matchup against No. 11 seed VCU in the next round.

Why It Matters

This victory marks another strong showing for Illinois, who have now progressed to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a key event in college basketball that garners significant attention each spring. The tournament is known for its unpredictability, and Illinois’ performance against a lower-seeded opponent highlights their potential as a serious contender. Historically, teams that perform well in the early rounds often gain momentum, which can lead to deeper runs in the tournament. Illinois previously faced VCU in a 2016 matchup, winning 62-46, setting the stage for an intriguing rematch.
