High-Speed Rail Project Announced
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the first leg of Canada’s high-speed rail project, connecting Ottawa and Montreal, with construction set to begin in 2029. The 200-kilometer route will include a stop in Laval, Quebec, and aims to cut travel times in half, reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h. The project, expected to cost between $60 billion and $90 billion, will create 51,000 jobs and is led by Alto in collaboration with various companies. Proposed legislation in Budget 2025 seeks to expedite land acquisition and environmental assessments for the project.
