Magnitude 6.0 earthquake shakes lower South Island

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit the lower South Island early this morning, striking offshore south of Southland at 12:53 AM, with its epicenter 115km northwest of the Snares Islands and a depth of 12km. The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the quake, which was categorized as “moderate” by GeoNet.
