French MPs Approve Assisted Dying Bill
French MPs have voted 305 to 199 to approve a bill allowing assisted dying for terminally ill patients, with President Macron’s support, aiming for it to become law by 2027. The legislation, which is less permissive than in the Netherlands and Belgium, requires patients to have a serious, incurable illness and undergo a 48-hour waiting period before confirming their intention. While the bill has faced opposition from conservatives and concerns about vulnerable individuals, it also includes provisions for palliative care access and safeguards for medical staff who object to assisted dying.
