In north-western Nigeria, fear looms over the community of Tangaza, where US airstrikes targeted the Islamist militant group Lakurawa on Christmas night. The militants, known for their camouflage and vibrant turbans, have terrorized locals, imposing taxes and ruling with an iron fist. Residents reported the ferocity of the strikes, which damaged buildings in nearby Nukuru village, yet they remain anxious about the militants regrouping due to the lack of government presence. Villagers are often left with no choice but to comply with the armed group’s demands to avoid violence and theft.
