Firoz Cachalia: Police struggle to combat gang violence
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

South Africa’s Police Minister Firoz Cachalia admitted that security forces are struggling to combat increasingly complex gang violence, particularly in the Eastern and Western Cape provinces, contributing to the nation’s high homicide rate. Despite the establishment of an anti-gang unit in 2019, Cachalia noted that gangs continue to wield significant power, with police data indicating an average of 63 murders per day. Recent violence includes a mass shooting linked to illegal mining turf wars, resulting in multiple casualties. President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged enhanced law enforcement measures to address this escalating crisis.
