A Canadian man, Jeffrey Wood, was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for stealing a famous photograph of Sir Winston Churchill, known as “The Roaring Lion,” from Ottawa’s Château Laurier hotel between Christmas 2021 and January 2022. The photograph, taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1941, was discovered in Italy last year, with the buyer unaware of its stolen status. Wood, who pleaded guilty to theft and forgery, claimed he stole it to help his brother with mental health issues; his sentence was deemed “unnecessarily harsh” by his lawyer, given he was a first-time offender.
