Stolen Detroit cars shipped to Iraq and Dubai by crime groups.

Law enforcement officials are concerned about an increase in international organized crime groups smuggling stolen vehicles from Detroit to the Middle East, with juveniles being recruited to assist in the thefts. Eight men have been indicted for operating a car theft and smuggling operation in Detroit, sending stolen vehicles to port cities and then overseas. The surge in vehicle thefts in Michigan has seen a 4.1% increase in 2023, with criminals exploiting juveniles to avoid harsh penalties. The criminals manipulate shipping containers and manifests to smuggle vehicles, making it challenging for authorities to detect the illegal activity.
