Belgian prosecutor seeks to try ex-diplomat over Congolese hero’s killing

Belgian prosecutors aim to trial 92-year-old former diplomat Etienne Davignon for his alleged role in the unlawful detention and killing of Congolese independence leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961. Lumumba’s children have sought justice since 2011, following Belgium’s moral responsibility acknowledgment and apology for the assassination, which was carried out with tacit Belgian support.
