Manchester United declines to sign Victor Osimhen due to Afcon concerns

Manchester United’s former first-team coach Benni McCarthy revealed that the biennial Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) schedule influenced the club’s decision not to pursue Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who had an impressive 26 league goals for Napoli in the 2022-23 season. Despite initially being a top target, concerns over losing Osimhen for crucial matches during Afcon led United to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta instead. Osimhen was later named African Footballer of the Year in 2023 before moving to Galatasaray in September 2024.
