Council supports funding for bus shelters in East Kimberley

The Wyndham East Kimberley shire council has approved participation in the State Government’s bus shelter subsidy program to enhance public transport infrastructure. At a meeting on March 24, council members voted to endorse the program and authorized staff to identify priority bus stop locations in Kununurra and Wyndham. The Public Transport Authority (PTA) will assess these sites for eligibility, with cost estimates to be presented for final council approval. The bus shelter subsidy program allows local governments to co-fund new shelters, with the PTA covering up to 50% of installation costs, capped at $7,000 per shelter. Standard installation costs are estimated at around $14,000, with the shire responsible for covering the remaining expenses and ongoing maintenance. The initiative aims to improve safety, accessibility, and comfort for public transport users in the region.

Why It Matters

This initiative reflects a broader trend among local governments to enhance public transport services in response to increasing community demand for improved infrastructure. Historically, public transport systems have struggled with inadequate facilities, impacting accessibility and safety for users. The introduction of new bus shelters, supported by the PTA, is part of a concerted effort to foster greater use of public transportation, which is vital for reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable mobility. Enhanced public transport infrastructure can lead to improved community connectivity and support local economic growth.
