Assam Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh was arrested for a social media post insulting a Dalit woman, leading to criticism from the opposition party and defense from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Singh was taken into custody by the Lakhimpur district police following a complaint from the wife of a BJP MLA regarding his post questioning the status of rape cases against BJP leaders. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh condemned the arrest as “worse than atrocious,” while Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi claimed Singh was forcibly taken away during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Assam.
