Commuter who dodged £20,000 of fares is finally caught after getting too big for his boots

A commuter evaded approximately £20,000 in train fares over three years by purchasing short e-tickets between Vauxhall and Waterloo, while traveling from Surrey, using a 16-17 Saver Railcard he was not entitled to. He was eventually caught by South Western Railway’s revenue protection team after an eight-week investigation, which revealed he had accumulated £19,500 in unpaid fares. The incident was featured on Channel 5’s documentary ‘Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law,’ highlighting the issue of fare evasion, which costs the SWR network nearly £40 million annually.
