President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has relented under threats from President Trump and will allow U.S. military planes to fly deportees into the country after initially turning two transports back. The White House announced that tariffs and sanctions would be held in reserve, with visa sanctions remaining until deportees arrive. The clash highlighted the tension between the two leaders over deportations and reflected Trump’s willingness to make an example out of Colombia as countries prepare for mass deportations of unauthorized immigrants.
