In eastern Mali, a gold mine collapse in the Kéniéba district resulted in the deaths of 42 people and numerous injuries. This is the second major accident in Mali this year, with concerns about illegal mining operations and whether profits could fund extremist groups. Gold mining is vital to Mali’s economy, with over 2 million people dependent on the sector for income, making up more than 80% of the country’s total exports in 2021.
