The Colstrip power plant, the nation’s most polluting coal-burning facility, has requested an exemption from stricter air pollution limits imposed by the Biden administration in 2023. The plant, lacking modern pollution controls, faces closure if it does not comply, risking higher energy costs and grid unreliability. Environmental groups are likely to challenge any exemption granted by the Trump administration, as the technology required to meet the new standards is available and widely adopted by other coal plants in the country.
