Court Upholds Saskatchewan’s Decision on Coal Power Plants
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A group of environmentalists has lost a legal challenge against Saskatchewan’s decision to extend the operation of three coal-fired power plants until 2050, which is 20 years beyond the federal phase-out deadline. The Saskatchewan Environmental Society and others argued this undermines federal law and international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The provincial government, citing the need for reliable energy during a transition to nuclear power, expressed satisfaction with the court ruling that deemed the matter a policy issue. Activists are considering an appeal while expressing concerns over the continued reliance on fossil fuels.
