Glaciers to melt rapidly by midcentury, study says
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Scientists warn that up to 4,000 glaciers could melt annually if global warming is not curbed, leading to a significant loss of the world’s glaciers. A study published in Nature Climate Change predicts that by the end of the century, only a fraction of the current 200,000 glaciers will remain, with about 18,288 left. Even if governments meet their pledges to limit warming to 1.5C, the world could still lose 2,000 glaciers a year by 2041. The urgent need for ambitious climate policy is emphasized by the study, highlighting the impact of near-term policies and societal decisions on glacier preservation.
