On 28 July 2024, Muhammadiyah, Indonesia’s second largest Islamic organisation, agreed to President Joko Widodo’s government’s offer of mining concessions, following the lead of the largest Islamic organisation, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Critics both within and outside of these organisations have voiced opposition to the decisions, raising concerns about the acceptance of the mining concessions.

Myanmar junta troops massacre 11 villagers, most too old to flee, residents say
