Ghana’s Asante king, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, celebrated the return of 130 gold and bronze artefacts from the UK and South Africa, some of which were looted during colonial times. The items, including royal regalia and drums, were handed over at Kumasi’s Manhyia Palace, with a significant contribution from art historian Hermione Waterfield and AngloGold Ashanti. This gesture aims to foster cultural respect amid tensions over local mining practices. The return reflects a growing trend in African art restitution, highlighting the ongoing dialogue about colonial legacies.
