A massive emergence of periodical cicadas, specifically Brood XIV, is anticipated across the eastern United States in 2025, particularly in Kentucky and Tennessee, with smaller populations extending to areas from Massachusetts to Georgia. Periodical cicadas, characterized by their synchronized emergence every 13 or 17 years, will begin to surface around June 21, responding to soil temperatures of 64 degrees. These cicadas will swarm, producing loud mating calls before laying eggs, which will hatch within eight weeks, leading to the next generation burrowing underground.
