A man was fatally shot by a California Highway Patrol officer outside a mall in Cerritos on Friday, according to authorities.
The incident took place around 4 p.m. at Los Cerritos Center, a large shopping mall located next to the 605 Freeway in southeast Los Angeles County, as stated by Deputy Veronica Fantom, a spokesperson for the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
The man who was shot was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, Fantom confirmed.
The circumstances that led to the shooting remain unclear, with no information provided by a CHP spokesperson. KTTV reported that the shooting followed a CHP pursuit.
Although detectives from the Sheriff’s Department were summoned to aid in the investigation on Friday evening, Fantom clarified that the agency was not directly involved in the incident.
Video footage shared on social media showed shoppers fleeing from stores and heading into the parking lot at Los Cerritos Center upon hearing the gunshots.
