China Opposes Australia’s Control of Darwin Port
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

China’s ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, warned the Australian government against taking control of Port Darwin, currently leased to the Chinese-owned Landbridge Group, emphasizing that such actions would be unethical and detrimental to business. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged to regain control of the port, claiming it serves the national interest, despite prior reviews finding no grounds to alter the lease. Xiao stated that Beijing would take measures to protect Landbridge’s interests if Australia attempts to change the agreement. This situation arises amidst strained relations between China and Australia, despite strong trade ties.
