The tragic incident involving the drowning of two Chinese fishermen on February 14, following a chase by Taiwan’s coast guard near Kinmen island, is poised to further weaken Taiwan’s sovereignty in favor of China’s territorial claims. The event took place in an area that China had long acknowledged as “prohibited or restricted” for Chinese vessels, but on February 17, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office denied the existence of any such restrictions.

Following the drownings, China’s coast guard declared its intention to conduct regular patrols in the waters near Kinmen. On February 19, they boarded a Taiwan cruise ship near Kinmen, signaling a concerning escalation in China’s approach. This move has raised fears among political observers in Taipei about the potential for legal warfare and incremental shifts in China’s favor, similar to their tactics in the South China Sea and Taiwan Straits.

According to the Taiwanese coastguard, the incident occurred when the fishermen’s speedboat entered prohibited waters off Kinmen. The attempt to apprehend them led to the boat capsizing and two of the four occupants losing their lives. This event has sparked concerns about China’s motives and the implications for Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Experts warn that the Kinmen incident could serve as a blueprint for China’s gray zone tactics in other disputed territories, putting pressure on neighboring countries like Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The lack of offensive capabilities on Kinmen makes it a vulnerable target for China’s strategic maneuvers.

The drownings highlight Taiwan’s ongoing challenge of dealing with Chinese vessels trespassing in its waters and engaging in provocative actions. These incidents reflect a broader pattern of China’s assertiveness in maritime disputes, raising tensions in the region.

As China ramps up its propaganda efforts around the Kinmen incident, Taiwan faces increased pressure from a narrative that seeks to portray China as the victim. The use of propaganda and misinformation to shape public opinion is a concerning development in the ongoing tensions between the two sides.

Overall, the Kinmen incident underscores the complex dynamics at play in the Taiwan Strait and the broader geopolitical implications of China’s territorial ambitions. It serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Taiwan in defending its sovereignty against an assertive and increasingly aggressive China.
