The lithium in the Atacama salt flat is a global resource vital for green energy, but the local communities fear losing their culture and livelihood. The process involves pumping lithium-rich brine to the surface, evaporating it in pools, and transporting it to Antofagasta for purification. Three companies are currently operating in the area.
