CHARLEBOIS: Canada’s food waste epidemic needs a wake-up call

In Canada, a recent report led by food waste expert Dr. Martin Gooch revealed that 46.5% of food is wasted, with 41.7% of this waste considered avoidable, resulting in a loss of $58 billion. Despite little improvement in the food waste situation, the introduction of the Canadian Food Sentiment Index by Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab shows that 76.6% of Canadians are actively trying to reduce food waste, especially with rising food prices encouraging consumers to be more mindful of their household food inventory.
