Chad’s former prime minister and opposition leader Succes Masra has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for inciting violence through racist and xenophobic messages, following inter-communal clashes in May that resulted in 35 deaths. Masra, who denies the charges and plans to appeal, has been a vocal critic of President Mahamat Deby and faced legal issues after returning to Chad under an amnesty in 2024.
