Statues Stolen from Syria’s National Museum

Ancient statues and artefacts have been stolen from Syria’s National Museum in Damascus, with six marble Roman-era statues missing after a break-in discovered on Monday. The Directorate-General for Antiquities has launched an investigation while enhancing security measures, and local security forces are questioning museum guards. Established in 1919, the museum houses invaluable archaeological collections but has faced significant damage during Syria’s civil war, including looting and destruction by ISIS. The museum resumed full operations in January 2025 after years of partial closure.
