According to BBC research, the number of plays and musicals produced by the UK’s main subsidised theatres fell by nearly a third from 2014 to 2024, with 229 original productions staged compared to 332 a decade earlier. Funding cuts and rising costs have been cited as significant factors contributing to this decline, with National Theatre executive director Kate Varah noting that many in the industry are at “breaking point.” However, some venues claim that the productions they do stage are larger in scale, aimed at longer runs in tour or the West End.
