Referee and student killed in Iran protests

A referee and a student are among hundreds reportedly killed in Iran’s anti-government protests, which erupted on December 28 over economic issues and have spread to 186 cities. Coach Amir Mohammad Koohkan, 26, was shot during protests in Neyriz, while student Rubina Aminian, 23, was fatally shot in Tehran. The US-based rights group reports nearly 500 protesters dead, with a likely higher toll, as the Iranian regime cracks down on dissent. The protests are the largest since 2022, following the death of Mahsa Amini, and have led to significant arrests and violence.
