Ottawa and the provinces have generated over $5.4 billion in cannabis tax revenue since legalization in October 2018, with the federal government collecting $1.2 billion and provinces $4.2 billion. Ontario received the largest share at $1.5 billion, while Alberta led per capita revenue at about $210. Federal tax revenue fell short of projections, totaling approximately $567 million by 2023, and spending on education and prevention programs was significantly lower than anticipated. The data excludes Manitoba’s tax revenue due to its non-participation in the federal framework.
