Canada and the Philippines have concluded talks for a defense pact to hold joint combat drills and boost defense engagements in response to China’s actions in the South China Sea; this agreement will improve interoperability between forces and allow larger joint exercises in the region. The Philippines is also broadening defense ties with other friendly countries, such as the United States, Australia, Japan, and potentially Germany, India, and Singapore, to deter China’s aggression and protect global trade routes. Canada has been vocal in confronting China’s actions in the South China Sea and has provided the Philippines access to its “Dark Vessel Detection System” to track illegal vessels in the region.
