Canada aims for a 75% reduction in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 2035 with new regulations effective in 2028.
The Canadian government has announced new rules to cut methane emissions from its oil and gas sector by 75% compared to 2014 levels. These regulations, fulfilling a promise by Prime Minister Mark Carney, allow a longer timeline than previous proposals and will involve prohibiting venting, establishing inspection schedules, and enabling operators to customize their methane control strategies. While the oil and gas sector’s emissions have been rising, these rules are projected to reduce emissions significantly without major impacts on production levels.
