Van Nuys building connected to Medicare hospice fraud investigation

A building in Van Nuys, California, known as the Merabi Professional Medical Plaza, is at the center of scrutiny over a significant number of hospice providers and healthcare agencies registered at the address. CBS News reported that 89 hospice companies are registered in the three-story, 32,000-square-foot facility, while state records indicate 147 hospice and home health care agencies are associated with it. Concerns have been raised about possible Medicare fraud, as over 700 of the nearly 1,800 hospice centers in Los Angeles County have been flagged for potential fraud indicators. A 2022 California State Auditor report highlighted a 1,500% increase in hospice agencies in Los Angeles County since 2010, far exceeding the national average. Additionally, federal regulators have documented nearly 400 violations at 75 companies located within the plaza.

Why It Matters

The situation at the Merabi Professional Medical Plaza highlights growing concerns about Medicare fraud within the hospice industry, particularly in Los Angeles County, which has seen a dramatic increase in hospice agencies over the past decade. Federal law mandates that hospice providers maintain a physical office, yet many companies are registered at a single address, raising questions about their legitimacy. The California State Auditor’s findings indicate systemic issues in oversight and regulation, emphasizing the need for effective monitoring to prevent fraudulent activities that could undermine the integrity of healthcare services.
