Calcutta High Court rejected West Bengal government’s appeal challenging the life term till death sentence of Sanjay Roy in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case, but accepted a similar plea by the CBI. The court stated that as the central agency conducted the investigation, only the CBI has the authority to appeal against the sentence, not the state government. CBI sought enhancement of punishment for Roy, who was found guilty of rape, causing death, and murder under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with fines.
