Birmingham City Council has declared a major incident over ongoing bin strikes, resulting in 17,000 tonnes of waste remaining uncollected on the streets. Council leader John Cotton cited concerns about public health as the reason for the declaration, allowing for increased street cleaning operations and fly-tipping removal with extra vehicles and crews. Daily picket lines during the strike have prevented vehicles from leaving depots, causing waste buildup, leading to the regrettable but necessary action to address the harm and distress to communities in Birmingham.
