Ultra-Orthodox Protest in Jerusalem
Hundreds of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israelis are protesting in Jerusalem against proposed changes to military conscription exemptions for religious students. The “march of the million” unites various factions of the Haredi community, which comprises about 14% of Israel’s population, in opposition to enforced conscription and recent arrests of draft-evaders. They fear their traditional lifestyle is threatened, while many Israelis argue for greater military participation from the community to address manpower shortages. However, integrating large numbers of ultra-Orthodox into the military poses significant challenges due to their strict religious beliefs.
